Do I need a power station just to keep phones charged?
No. Charging three phones a day uses about 30 Wh, and a 20,000 mAh power bank holds about 70 Wh, so two of those cover a long weekend for under $80. A power station starts to earn its price the moment you add lights, a router, a fan or a laptop, because those need AC outlets and real capacity.
When a small power station makes sense
Add a router (15 W), some lights (40 W) and a laptop (60 W) to the phones and you are at 990 Wh a day, which is a 300 Wh unit's whole charge or a third of a 1 kWh unit. The small class also adds a flashlight, a 12 V port and, on most units, the ability to recharge from a folding panel.
The three smallest units worth buying
| Unit | Battery | Weight | Battery type | Price when checked |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jackery Explorer 300 | 293 Wh | 7.1 lb | Lithium-ion (NMC), 800 cycles | $259 |
| EcoFlow RIVER 3 Plus | 286 Wh | 10.4 lb | LiFePO4, 3,000 cycles | $279 |
| Bluetti Elite 30 V2 | 288 Wh | 9.5 lb | LiFePO4, 3,000 cycles | $280 |
The Jackery is the lightest and cheapest but uses an older NMC battery rated for 800 cycles. The other two use LiFePO4 rated for 3,000, which matters if you will use it for camping too, not just emergencies.
