Can a power station run my gas furnace?

Yes. A gas furnace burns gas for heat but needs about 500 W of electricity for the blower and controls, with a 1,200 W starting surge. Over a cold night the blower runs maybe 6 hours, about 2,400 Wh, so a 3 kWh unit covers one night. The catch is the wiring: most furnaces are hard-wired, so you need a transfer switch or a furnace plug installed first.

The wiring step most guides skip

You cannot plug a hard-wired furnace into a power station. Two safe options, both a one-hour job for an electrician: a furnace transfer switch (an inlet and switch mounted beside the furnace, about $150 to $300 installed) or converting the furnace's power feed to a plug and outlet where code allows. Never backfeed a panel through a dryer outlet; it can kill a line worker.

Blower draw varies from 300 W on a small ECM motor to 800 W on an older PSC motor. The furnace label or a plug-in meter gives yours.

Stretch it

Drop the thermostat to 60°F and close off unused rooms; the blower may run half as often. Cold weather also cuts battery performance, so keep the power station indoors, not in the garage.

Common questions

What about a heat pump or electric furnace?

Those draw 3,000 to 10,000 W and are out of reach for portable units. A gas or propane furnace, boiler, or pellet stove is what a power station can realistically keep running.
