Can a power station run a window air conditioner?

Yes, for a 5,000 to 6,000 BTU unit. It draws about 450 W averaged over an hour and surges to 1,500 W at startup, so a 2 kWh station runs it for about 4 hours and a 3 kWh station for about 6 hours. Bigger units and central air are out of reach for portable batteries.

Averages assume the compressor cycles about 60% of the time in a closed room. On a 95°F day with the door open, it runs nonstop and these halve.

Three things that double your hours

  • Buy an inverter-compressor AC. Models from Midea, LG and GE labeled "inverter" or "variable speed" have almost no startup surge and use 30 to 40% less energy at steady state.
  • Cool one room. Close the door, block the sun, and run the AC in the bedroom only.
  • Add solar. 400 W of panels can cover most of a small AC's daytime draw, saving the battery for the night.

Common questions

Can a 1 kWh power station run a window AC?

It can start a 5,000 BTU unit (2,700 W surge or more needed) but only runs it for about two hours. Fine for a nap, not for a night.

What about a portable AC on wheels?

Those are less efficient than window units and draw 900 to 1,400 W. Expect half the runtime of the table above.
